PRIORITY IN THE DISTRIBUTION OF COVID VACCINES:

THE NORMATIVE MEANING OF AGING

Research article

What is the moral basis of current grouping and practice?

  • Prioritization in vaccine distribution needs a moral basis

  • Based on this moral basis, goals of vaccination should be determined.

  • Decisions made during the vaccination process should be considered and discussed on this moral basis.

  • What moral basis is used in the current grouping? (saving the maximum life years and saving the lives of the maximum number of people)

  • Turkey readily observed in the policies implemented in the form of as many seem ready to save lives.

What is the ideal method to achieve the goals of vaccination established on this moral basis?

  • If the goal of vaccination is to save as many lives as possible, is current (age only) grouping an ideal method to achieve this goal?

  • Is it possible to save more lives with a grouping in which age is a categorical criterion?

  • In prioritization; Should chronic illness, social factors (working in crowded places) and similar risk factors be included in the equation as the targeted criteria based on above? Why is that? How?

How can modeling work in the distribution of vaccines?

  • Can models used in public health be used to show efficiency and potential shortcomings before applying the vaccination prioritization criteria?

  • Can these models be used to test the determined method and measure the expected benefit as a result of applying this method?

  • The algorithms produced carry artifacts from the biological and social infrastructure of the society in which they are produced. Transfer of algorithms means the transfer of values.

  • These models using algorithms should include sociocultural criteria as well as scientific findings.

  • It is necessary to make an algorithm (modeling) that reflects our own culture and includes our sociocultural values.
